Super Snow Moon Tonight Is the Biggest Full Moon of 2019

"The moon appeared larger and brighter than the ordinary full moon", said 10-year-old Wenzel, a fifth grader. This February's Super Moon's centre will be 356.846 kilometres from the Earth's. The moon will be on its biggest phase, and also very close to the Earth, resulting in a moon that is 14% bigger and about 26% brighter.

The difference between the moon's closest point in its orbit (perigee) and its farthest (apogee). But it can creep as close as roughly 221,500 miles and as far as 252,700 miles.

During the supermoon, the effects of the moon's gravitational pull on the Earth's oceans will be more pronounced, generating higher than normal high tides, known as "Spring Tides".

November 2016 was the closest that the moon has been to the earth. In 2019, there are three supermoons and they fall in the first three months of the year. Due to a number of nuances in the interactions between the sun, Earth and moon, the distance between us and and each supermoon varies a bit.

The full worm moon won't be as spectacular as either the Super Red Moon and Super Snow Moon - so make sure you don't miss out on this spectacular sight.

This makes it appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual.

A rare Super Snow Moon will be visible in the sky over Ireland this Tuesday, February 19th.

"You can always cover the whole face of the Moon with your little fingertip held out in front of you at arm's length".

But American space fans will still get a great show ― and plenty of photo opportunities ― with this month's supermoon.

Because of the nature of the snow moon, it's possible that the snowy weather just might come between you and this wow-worthy celestial moment.

Supermoon is the term given to a full moon when it reaches perigee, or its closest point to Earth during its orbit. The snow moon title was given as it was a month where heavy snowfall was observed in Europe and Native America. At 5.47pm the Moon will rise and around 6pm the sun will set, giving you the opportunity to see this phenomenon. This will also be the last remaining supermoon of 2019 with the next one not occurring until March 9, 2020.
