"For us to take on Argentina is a good way to see how we stack up".

Lionel Messi has been ruled out of Argentina's friendly against Morocco on Tuesday "as a precaution" after suffering a groin injury in the 3-1 defeat by Venezuela.

Salomon Rondon's strike in the sixth minute got things off to a bad start, before Jhon Murillo doubled the lead and Josef Martinez scored a third.

Messi last appeared in the light-blue and white of Argentina at the World Cup in Russian Federation, after which he took a self-imposed exile from the team. "The chances we created were thanks to him".

Lautaro Martinez scored Argentina's only goal of the game as he finished off a wonderful counter attack.

"Now what remains is try and get the team to play along with him and get the best out of him".

Venezuela on Monday plays a Catalunya team that is expected to include former Spain players Gerard Pique and Xavi Hernandez.

Messi had a frustrating evening in Madrid as his side were outplayed and embarrassed by a tireless Venezuela side.

The 31-year-old did show flashes of his ability and his cross to set up a Lautaro Martinez header from close range. The friendly match will be in the Catalan city of Girona.

The Argentine Football Federation tweeted the injury update following the loss at Atletico Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

There are times when the weight of expectation at global level - where he has scored 65 times in 129 games - has appeared too much for even Messi's shoulders to bear.
