Measles case confirmed in Maryland in someone who was in Pikesville

Known exposure sites in Oakland County are listed at Oakgov.com/health. There are no public exposure sites for the Wayne County case.

Meanwhile, in southeast MI, the Oakland County Health Department is hosting a special measles vaccination clinic for the public on Saturday, April 6 from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m.at the South Oaklanfield Health Center in Southfield. Please call ahead to ensure vaccine is available.

The health authority says both the Victoria Health Unit and Saanich Health Unit will be open on Sunday, April 7 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

More than 93 percent of people who receive a single dose of MMR will develop immunity to measles, and more than 97 percent will be protected after receiving a second dose. The first dose should be given at 12 months and second between the ages of 4 and 6.

Since March 24, there have been eight confirmed measles cases in Northern California including four in Butte County, three in Placer County and one in Tehama County. Wikipedia tells me that in 1980, 2.6 million people died of it but, as vaccination spread around the world, by 1990 "only" 545,000 died; and by 2014, global vaccination programmes had reduced the number of deaths from measles to 73,000. Symptoms usually appear 10-12 days after exposure but may appear as early as seven days and as late as 21 days after exposure.

On 26 March, Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock called for new legislation to force social media companies to remove content promoting false information about vaccines.

Measles is a highly contagious illness that can be prevented with the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine, health officials added. The last time the state had this many measles cases was in 1991 when 65 cases were reported.

Ottawa Public Health has confirmed a case of measles in the city. The measles virus may remain in the air for up to two hours.

The virus can live for up to two hours in the air where the infected person was present.

High fever (may spike to over 104˚F).

It also warned people to keep looking for signs until April 22 because it can take up to 18 days for these symptoms to become obvious.

Symptoms include a high fever; runny nose; cough; a rash that's red, raised and blotchy; red, watery eyes; and white spots on gums, roof of the mouth and inner cheeks, according to the CDC.
