United midfielder Paul Pogba was the only player not from either Manchester City or Liverpool to be named in the team.

Manchester City's Bernardo Silva was also in the running with van Dijk's Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane.

Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in January of past year for a club-record £70million rising to a potential £75million and has made a huge impact at Anfield.

The 27-year-old Dutchman has helped the Anfield club record the best defensive record in the Premier League this year, as well as guiding them to the Champions League semi-finals.

The French World Cup victor was the only Manchester United player on the list which was dominated by players from Premier League champions and city rivals Manchester City.

Chelsea forward Eden Hazard wasn't included, despite being on the six-man shortlist for the Professional Footballers' Association's Player of the Year award.

Victory for Van Dijk means the prize remains with Liverpool, following Mohamed Salah's triumph last season.

Sterling is the favourite to claim the Young Player of the Year award ahead of Silva, Marcus Rashford, Trent Alexander-Arnold, David Brooks and former Republic of Ireland global Declan Rice.

But it is Ederson who takes the number one jersey with the PFA, which will honour the players at its annual awards ceremony in London on Sunday, April 28.

The Reds coach also admitted Van Dijk gives the team an opportunity to play further away from their goal and touched on his brilliant dribbling and keen eye for pass with the ball at his feet.
