"Avengers: Endgame" finally yielded the top spot in North American box offices this weekend to the latest "John Wick" action film, but the Marvel Studios/Disney blockbuster edged closer to historic status as the all-time No.1 grossing film.

Cast member Keanu Reeves arrives for a screening of the movie "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" in Los Angeles, California, U.S. May 15, 2019.

John Wick: Chapter 3 also surpassed the $30 million opening weekend of John Wick: Chapter Two.

Avengers earned $29.4 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its total to $771 million in North America.

After three weeks in the top spot, Avengers: Endgame, has now passed Avatar to become the second highest grossing film ever in the United States and Titanic to become the second-highest grossing film ever worldwide (behind only Avatar).

The third installment of the John Wick franchise opened up at nearly double the opening for John Wick: Chapter 2 ($30M) and over four times the amount of the original John Wick ($14M) back in 2012. Halle Berry and Laurence Fisburne also star.

John Wick has certainly come a long way.

"A Dog's Journey" arrived below expectations, launching at No. 4 with $8 million from 3,200 venues. That movie debuted with $18 million and went on to earn $64 million at the domestic box office. A sequel to 2017's A Dog's goal, the film falls far short of its predecessor, which opened to $18.2 million.

Most disappointing, however, is the young adult adaptation "The Sun Is Also a Star" which grossed only $2.6 million from over 2,000 screens and landed in eighth place. It got a poor B- CinemaScore. "It's tough when one movie over performs by this kind of magnitude".

It's a far cry from the days of "The Fault in Our Stars'" $48 million debut in 2014, and even the last film based on a Nicola Yoon novel, "Everything, Everything", which opened to over $11 million in 2017. The teen drama stars "Grown-ish's" Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton and follows a young couple that falls in love despite one of their families facing deportation.

"John Wick 3" opened alongside Universal and Amblin's "A Dog's Journey" and Warner Bros. and MGM's "The Sun Is Also a Star".

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at USA and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.
