However, Spurs staged a remarkable comeback in the second half thanks to a hat-trick from Lucas Moura.

"To have the chance to play a final is wonderful".

The England captain has been sidelined since April 9, when he suffered an ankle injury during the first leg of the Champions League semifinal against Manchester City.

After Liverpool's vast comeback the night before, Spurs went one better as Lucas Moura scored a second-half hat-trick to win on away goals.

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has taken to Twitter to give his reaction to Tottenham Hotspur's win against Ajax on Wednesday evening.

"That's why I ran over there because it was straight and I didn't cut any corners".

Tottenham are 1-0 down to Ajax heading into the second leg of the semi-finals in Amsterdam today. "He's how we won the game, he deserves it, after a rollercoaster of a season, for him to get us in the final".

Liverpool await them in Madrid on June 1, and Moura managed to get himself together afterwards before continuing to speak with the Brazilian media.

The Ajax players slumped to the turf as his deciding goal went in, their fans stunned as they fell short of a first final since 1996.

"We're lucky we've gone through and we look forward to the Champions League final". Emulating Gini Wijnaldum on Tuesday, Moura hit a quickfire double to level the second leg.

"I'm so glad I'm still around to see this", the 61-year-old told Lineker.

"The lads dug deep and showed passion and that is all you can ask for".

Ajax, by contrast, were buoyant after winning the Dutch Cup final at the weekend, and they began on the front foot with Dusan Tadic forcing a flying save from Hugo Lloris. We know we need to win and perform our best.

I think this is a manifestation of all of that together. We will play in an arena with an incredible atmosphere and we hope that will help us. We saw Liverpool find a way to beat Barcelona and we found a way to beat Ajax.
