And what areas should be anxious about outbreaks?

The report from the CDC says that most of the cases of measles encountered are among children who have not been vaccinated with the MMR vaccine (that covers against measles, mumps and rubella or German measles infection).

A decade ago, the cases numbered fewer than 100 a year. But measles' reproductive number is high, between 12 and 18, meaning that one person, on average, infects 12 to 18 other people.

Officials said the increase in cases is the largest since 1994, including 78 reported in the past week.

Some of those cases are listed below.

Remember, it was just two years ago there were 75 confirmed measles cases in Minnesota.

The cases have been concentrated in New York City, where officials said more than 390 have been recorded since October, mostly among children in Orthodox Jewish communities in Brooklyn.

The agency said people who received two doses of the vaccine as children, according to the US vaccination schedule, are protected for life.

Esper said that measles was declared eradicated in the 2000 because of a "successful vaccination campaign that started back in 1963". Those who don't have evidence that they're immune from getting a blood test or don't remember if they've been vaccinated should get a booster shot of one dose of the MMR vaccine.

Before vaccines were available, almost everyone was infected with measles, mumps and rubella viruses during childhood, according to the CDC.

"The measles vaccine that was introduced at that time may not have been as effective as the current vaccine", said Cynthia Kenyon, an Epidemiologist Supervisor with the Minnesota Department of Health. "If you do not have written documentation of MMR vaccine, you should get vaccinated", the CDC states on its website.

As of April 5, Texas Health and Human Services had confirmed 15 cases of the measles this year.

Pennsylvania is above that rate, according to the Department of Health, so the disease has not been gaining a foothold in the state.

Alt said measles is so far not circulating in OH - but that getting a second dose couldn't hurt.

- Other outbreaks have been reported in Washington state, New Jersey, California's Butte County and MI. "Currently the recommendation is anybody born 1957 or before is considered to have had the disease or been exposed to it at some point and time in the past, so they are considered to be immune", said Dr. Jay Zdunek, chief medical officer for Austin Regional Clinic.

"Measles is airborne, so people need to stay in special negative-pressure rooms". According to CDC, 503 of the 704 measles cases reported as of April 26 were in individuals who had not been vaccinated.

Adults and adolescents traveling internationally.

Knowing these numbers is great, but what does this mean as we look ahead?

- As authorities work to contain a measles outbreak sweeping across the country, health officials recommend Americans receive two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine - or verify that they have received two doses in their lifetime. When people from these areas visit the USA, the disease can take hold in places where vaccination rates are low.
