The individual was a child, as is so often the case, and while the youngster has reportedly recovered from his illness since originally being diagnosed a while ago, the confirmation of the illness was just revealed by state medical officials.

The county's health department said the people of most concern are those who have not been vaccinated, pregnant women and those with a weakened immune system.

Unvaccinated people travelling to countries where there have been large outbreaks of measles are particularly at risk, it added.

About 80 people who attended a party in Lower Hutt on Saturday are at risk of contracting measles. U.S. was declared to be measles-free in 2000. They want people to know, that's not recommended in most cases.

The afflicted school-aged child from Somerset County, whose measles case was confirmed on Monday, was vaccinated and had no complications while the disease ran its course, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention said. There have been more than 800 confirmed cases of measles in the country this year.

Note: those born between 1957 and 1989 may have had only one dose of MMR vaccine and should receive a second dose.

Professor Helen Bedford, of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said: "If you are unvaccinated or in doubt about whether you are protected, contact your GP practice". Almost all these cases have been linked back to worldwide travel by unvaccinated people and subsequent spread in unvaccinated populations in the U.S. So, protection against measles is especially critical for those who plan to travel internationally and for those in communities that might have lower vaccination rates.

The MMR vaccine is given on the NHS as a single injection to babies, as part of their routine vaccination schedule, usually within a month of their first birthday.

Measles is especially unsafe for children who can develop pneumonia, intellectual disabilities, or go deaf if they contract the disease. "The fact that most, if not all, of these travelers were immunized may have protected our entire community from a measles outbreak".

There was one known secondary case of measles this year, meaning a passenger became infected while traveling from another infected traveler, Cetron told CNN.

There has also been some spread into the wider population, such as those who may have missed out on the MMR vaccine when they were younger. It is spread when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes.
