Mystery over three bodies found shot by crossbow in hotel room

German police said on Monday they had found the corpses of two women in an apartment belonging to one of three people found dead, pierced by crossbow bolts, on Saturday in a guesthouse in the southern city of Passau. The dead women were discovered in the apartment of one of the three Passau victims in Wittingen in the district of Gifhorn, said a spokesman for the Prosecutor's office in Passau.

The German police said that the nature of the relationship between the three victims in Passau was still unclear.

"It was a odd group", one guest told Merkur news, adding that "they said good evening and just wanted to get to their room quickly".

The criminal police in the district of Gifhorn would investigate the background and identity of the women, according to investigators in Lower Bavaria.

Staff found the three bodies - that of a man, 54, and two women aged 30 and 33 - alongside two crossbows. The man and the older woman are from the village of Berod in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in southwestern Germany, while the younger woman was last registered as living in Wittingen.

German news agency DPA reported Sunday that employees of a hotel in the town of Passau found the bodies and two crossbows in the room. The 53-year-old was lying on a bed hand in hand with the 33-year-old, while the 30-year-old was discovered on the floor.

An autopsy has now been ordered.

Crossbows can be purchased legally in Germany by all people aged 18 or older.
