Simona Halep beat Swiss Belinda Bencic 6-2, 6-7 (2/7), 6-0 on Friday to advance to the final of the Madrid Open.

Osaka will achieve both of those goals if she makes it through to the quarter-finals this week, while Simona Halep must win the title to have any chance of replacing her.

"I think she played better tennis tonight", Halep said.

Simona Halep came back stronger in the final set, winning the final set 6-0.

French Open champion Halep, the victor in Madrid in 2016 and 2017, is regarded as the best clay-court player on tour and she has been in fine form this week, not dropping a set until this match.

In the men's tournament, Novak Djokovic will play Stefanos Tsitsipas for the title after the 20-year-old Greek stunned Rafael Nadal on Saturday to win a thrilling semifinal 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 on his fourth match point.

Monfils earned a match point at 5-6 on the Federer serve with an ice-cool backhand pass, but Federer followed in a second serve and bounced away a smash.

Four games won in a row, including a booming backhand down the line for 5-4, helped Bertens claim the first set before a brilliant lob set up a break in the opening game of the second. She will face Halep, who she has also beaten this year, in Dubai, in the semifinals. "I'm just happy how I was able to finish the match", she added. "I think at the beginning, I was a little bit searching for my game still, but I think the rest of the match I played really solid, really smart, and I was just going for my shots", said Bertens.

Naomi Osaka will start her mission to retain world number one status and be top seed at the French Open with a clash against Dominika Cibulkova on Wednesday. Stephens had no trouble getting past Petra Martic in her last-eight encounter.

And now, she will play Simona Halep in the last-four match later today. In contrast, Bencic's only clay semi-final came in Charleston in 2014, despite having won the junior French Open in 2013. Bertens has a WTA-best 219 aces in 2019. But they had never played on clay. Unhappy with her tennis and with life on the tour, Bertens spent the off-season taking stock on what she wanted out of her career.

Halep had no complaints, congratulating her opponent while admitting she played into Bertens' hands.
