China’s Xi in Russian Federation seeking cooperation amid United States tensions

With a shared sense of rejection from the West, Russia and China have hence moved closer together, both in economic and military cooperation, observers say.

"Putin is my best friend and a good colleague", Xi said in comments published on the Kremlin's website.

Trade between the two hit $100 billion past year, with major transactions and cooperation projects in military hardware, energy, transportation, agriculture, aviation and space.

Recognizing that the current worldwide security is facing serious challenges, China and Russian Federation intend to deepen strategic mutual trust and strengthen strategic coordination to firmly safeguard global and regional strategic stability, according to the joint statement.

He and Xi also visited Moscow Zoo for a ceremony welcoming a pair of giant pandas from China.

The two countries have also been synergizing the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative and the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union, and offered staunch support for each other on issues concerning their respective core interests.

'We decided that we would raise our bilateral relations to a new, higher level - increasing our mutual support and assistance, and promote our relations in a new era, ' he said, in remarks translated into Russian.

As bilateral trade hit a record high of over $100 billion previous year, Li said China and Russian Federation will strive to reach a bilateral trade volume of $200 billion as soon as possible.

The share of trade with Russian Federation held by China has nearly doubled to 20 per cent since then at Europe's expense.

Xi unveiled the pandas - Ru Yi and Ding Ding - after talks with Putin whom he called his "best friend" at the start of a three-day visit that will see him attend Russia's flagship economic forum in St Petersburg later this week.

Still, Russia needs China much more than the other way round, according to the analyst. He will have talks in the Kremlin with President Vladimir Putin before attending a formal reception and in the evening he will attend a night out at the Bolshoi theatre.

"The positions of Russian Federation and China are very close or coincide completely on most global issues", including the North Korean nuclear programme, the Venezuelan crisis and the Iran nuclear deal, Mr. Ushakov said, adding that all these issues would be discussed during the talks.

In his speech at the gathering, Xi said the two countries are embracing yet another historic moment in bilateral relations. It followed that by issuing a pair of travel warnings for the USA, while the Foreign Ministry accused the US of acting in bad faith in trade negotiations and said any attempts to interfere or undermine China's stability would be "doomed to fail".
